Chompers’ Challenge and the Mile High Mile
Chompers’ (SPREE’s Beaver Mascot) has thrown down the challenge to students at Denver’s seven SPREE Schools.  Trophies and school pride are on the line!  On June 1, 2008 students from all seven of Denver’s SPREE Schools will line up at the Mile High Mile to help raise money to keep SPREE programming free at their school.  Trophies will be awarded (during an awards ceremony) to the fastest boy and girl miler, and the Chompers’ Challenge Trophy (standing over three feet tall) will be awarded to the school that has the highest proportional participation level on race day.

Who does this race benefit?  Proceeds from the MILE HIGH MILE will benefit SPREE through the Greenway Foundation.  This money will allow us to continue to bring every student at each of our SPREE Schools to the South Platte River for a new excursion adventure each year from kindergarten through 5th grade.  It will also support the other SPREE activities that we provide, including: Fishing for Kids at Overland Pond, SPREE Schools Give Back Service Learning, SPREE Continuation Project, SPREE River Writing Race, South Platte Paint Off, Art on the River, and SPREE Spirit Assemblies.  Best of all, proceeds from this race will help us continue to provide all of this to our SPREE Schools FREE OF CHARGE!

What is the Mile High Mile Scholarship Fund? – Many of the students at our SPREE Schools are unable to afford the race entry fee.  In order to ensure that no child is left out, the Mile High Mile Scholarship Fund was created.  Eligible students will be sponsored by donated money, and they will be able to run the race for free.

What is SPREE? – SPREE (South Platte River Environmental Education) is the educational arm of The Greenway Foundation.  Our mission is to inspire meaningful personal connections with nature in order to foster a lifelong sense of pride in, belonging to, and stewardship for our natural world by connecting the children of Denver to the South Platte River through engaging educational experiences.  SPREE serves over 4,000 students a year from across Denver.  Our main focus is on our seven SPREE schools.

What is a SPREE School? – SPREE Schools are schools where SPREE and the South Platte River are integral parts of the school’s mission, vision, and curriculum.  At SPREE Schools, every student visits the South Platte River at least once per year for a SPREE excursion.  In addition to these excursions, the teachers and staff at these schools strive to integrate the river into all aspects of school life.  From murals of the river on the walls, to river inspired writing and art projects, the South Platte River provides a constant backdrop for their educational experience.  SPREE schools also participate in special events along the river including fishing days, service projects, and other seasonal activities.  The seven SPREE Schools are: Fairview, McKinley Thatcher, Southmoor, Steele, Grant Ranch, Gilpin, and Teller.

What is the Mile High Mile? - The MILE HIGH MILE will begin and end at the State Capitol.  The philosophy behind the race is to encourage individuals of all ages to PUSH themselves to their highest level of fitness and motivation and complete the MILE HIGH MILE as quickly as possible.

Our mission is to inspire meaningful personal connections with nature in order to foster a lifelong sense of pride in, belonging to, and stewardship for our natural world by connecting the children of Denver to the South Platte River through engaging educational experiences.
